Glaucoma

Glaucoma is the second leading cause of blindness in adults. The condition refers to a group of eye diseases that leads to increased pressure within the eye, resulting in optic nerve damage. The underlying cause of glaucoma is unknown, but regular eye exams can lead to early detection and treatment, which often prevents loss of sight. Glaucoma symptoms vary depending on the type of glaucoma a patient is experiencing. Glaucoma treatments will vary depending on the type and severity of the disease. Eye drops are often used to lower intraocular pressure, but medication usage is often a problem due to the high cost of medications.

Another option for the treatment of glaucoma is laser surgery. A laser can be used to improve fluid drainage by creating a new drainage path. At Blue Laser Group, our physician uses an advanced laser that was developed especially for the treatment of glaucoma, called SLT. With SLT laser, the procedure takes less than a minute and is typically described as painless, requiring only a drop for anesthesia.

Glaucoma remains the leading cause of blindness in adults in spite of readily available painless treatment.  High on the list of causes is a remarkably high level of inadequate medication usage. The problem is easily understood by anyone who is required to use medications on a daily basis.  The problem becomes even more difficult due to the high cost of medications, especially if they are not covered by insurance or Medicare and the patient is on a relatively fixed income. A new laser developed especially for glaucoma, the SLT, received FDA approval  following years of clinical testing.  The significant advantage of the SLT over previous lasers is its’ method of action. The efficacy and safety levels are so high that the treatment is now recommended as the 1st line of treatment in all glaucoma patients before considering glaucoma eye drops.  In our practice the treatment is so effective, that for the great majority of our glaucoma patients the SLT is the only treatment they need. The treatment is covered by insurance companies, Medicare and Medicaid.  The procedure is performed in the examination room and takes less than a minute.
